GETTING STARTED:
================
When running BATTLESHIPS for the first time, you will be asked if your
monitor is capable of displaying colour. Press Y if it can. Selecting an
N assumes your monitor is monochrome.

SETUP MENU:
===========
From this menu you can change your monitor type, control the sound, adjust
the level of difficulty and enter your playing name. The changes take affect
when you press [Enter]. Use the UP and DOWN arrow keys to control the
cursor. The [SPACEBAR] toggles the values from one to another, and allows
you to enter a new name.
The [F1] key produces a summary of games instructions.
The [Enter] key starts the games.
The [Esc] key aborts the game.

PLAYING THE GAME:
=================
This is a computer version of the classic board game Battleships. You are
requested to hide your fleet of five ships on the right hand side grid.
The computer will hide its fleet on the left. Enter the co-ordinates by
first selecting the letter, then the number, e.g. A1.
The type of ship being hidden will be displayed just below the grid, with
the number of squares it occupies in brackets.
You cannot place your ships diagonally, but you can place them adjacent to
each other.
When you have placed all your ships, you will move to the left hand grid
where you will start attempt to sink the computer's fleet before it can sink
yours.
A white dot indicates a miss, and a red star indicates a hit. Whoever sinks
the opponent's fleet first, is the winner.
The higher your hit-miss ratio, the better your score, and rank for the Hall
of Fame.
When playing as a NOVICE, instead of a red asterisk, the type of boat is
displayed when hit; A = Aircraft Carrier, S = Submarine, etc.

HALL OF FAME
============
The fifteen best scores are kept in the hall of fame, and stored on disk in
the file BATTLE.SCR. Your score is obtained from your hit/miss ratio, and
multiplied by 10000. Your rank is based on your score.
If this file is deleted, the computer will recreate it, and so reset the
scores.

SOUND
=====
The sound can be turned off or on during play by typing SOUND and pressing
the Enter key.

ENDING THE GAME
===============
The game ends when an entire is fleet is sunk.
Typing QUIT also aborts the game.

CONFIGURATION PROBLEMS
======================
Deleting the file BATTLE.CFG, will allow the computer to recreate the file
with the default settings.

Enjoy.
